Klias Wetland + Fireflies Cruise Day Trip
Situated in the countryside, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, we are located on the banks of the Klias River in the centre of Klias Wetland. Unlike Sukau, on the east coast of Sabah, which is the well established area for the wildlife safari cruise, Kota Klias is newly discovered and most importantly it is easily accessible all year round and is connected with 100 kilometers of good road. You can travel south of Kota Kinabalu by train to Beaufort before catching a bus to Kota Klias or the conventional way by coach which will take only one and half hours.
On arriving, you will be walking into a traditional native village setting with a huge grass compound planted with many fruit trees including some towering well over 200 feet which is one of the world's largest species of fruit tree. There are many different types of 'Kampong' houses, built on stilts with bamboo walls and thatched palm leaf roofs(atap) including a large dinning lounge over the river.
You will see Proboscis monkeys native to the island Borneo only with their large pendulous noses and long thick tails, and also other species of monkey such as Macaque (long tail), the Langurs popularly known as the Leaf monkeys, namely the Maroon or Red Leaf, Hose's or Grey Leaf, the White Fronted Langur, the Silvered Leaf (most common in Klias wetland) and the Banded Langur.
The night cruise will bring you to the phenomena of synchronized flashing of lights of the magical fireflies, "I've never seen so many fire flies, it's like a street of brightly lit Christmas trees, it is absolutely amazing!" are the usual remarks by delighted visitors especially children.
On a clear night, you can occasionally catch the sight of nocturnal animals such as the fruit bat, the buffy fish owl, small snakes and even wild boars drinking from the river. On such nights a rare and breathtaking view of a myriad of stars including the Plough and the Milky Way can be seen with amazing clarity.
The early sunrise cruise brings you the sight of many species of birds, monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards, otters (rare), and tree snakes. The most common sighting are the colourful Stork-Billed and the White-Collared Kingfishers, birds of prey such as the majestic Brahminy Kite eagle, Pale Bellied Fish eagle, Peregrine falcons and the rare White Fronted falconet one of the smallest birds of prey in the world have been spotted by Dr David Jones, a keen bird watcher from United Kingdom. Hornbills, Olive backed and Great Black Woodpeckers, Oriental Darters, Dollar Birds, Red Crowned Barbet have all been recorded in our visitors' book!
